Pacific Rugby Cup

IRB Pacific Rugby Cup

In 2011 the IRB has announced an exciting new format for the IRB Pacific Rugby Cup which will see Super Rugby teams from Australia and New Zealand participating for the first time.

This new format will see the three A teams from Fiji, Samoa and Tonga taking on the Academy teams from six Super Rugby teams in three separate series – an Australian series, a New Zealand series and a Pacific Island series where the three Pacific Island teams will play each other.

The new format takes the IRB Pacific Rugby Cup to a new level. Designed to bridge the gap between domestic and International rugby for the best locally-based players from Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, the new format will now expose the Pacific Island players and management to some of the best professional rugby structures in the world.

The Tournament is a key element of the IRB’s global strategic investment program aimed at improving the competitiveness of the global Game.

William Sakuru is a special man, he has played Sevens for Fiji, he is also in his second consecutive PRC final on Saturday- but for a new team this time!

Floating out on the wing, William Sakuru is a quiet achiever, but a strong doer. In the past he has played Sevens for Fiji on the IRB Sevens Circuit, now he is aiming for glory in the 15s abbreviation.

He has serious wheels, he is not shy of the grunt work and physical side of rugby and his smile and personality shine like he does when given some space. He says the 15s game is obviously less open than Sevens, but when the chances do come he is ready to seize them. Click below on the video interview to hear more from the man himself.

William is also in a unique position, this is the second time in a row he is in a PRC final, however this time around he is a Barbarian aiming for glory, last year he was in the victorious Warriors camp.

Drawing on his experience gained on the global big stage in Wellington, San Diego and other hotly contested rugby stadiums, he uses this knowledge to better his performance today. Not too many can boast playing in front of an audience of 40, 000 plus and coping with the loudness that drowns out any team calls and yelling from your team mates.  He can and this valuable experience equips him for his dreams of playing well and heading to a Flying Fijian jumper.

William and the Barbarian team will play the Fiji Warriors at 3pm Fijitime on Saturday to determine the 2010 champion.

The Barbarians camp is determined and amazingly calm ahead of the big challenge, they know it will be a true battle and now is their chance.
