Pacific Nations Cup

The IRB Pacific Nations Cup is an International round-robin competition comprising the test teams of Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Japan.  The Junior All Blacks - who in 2008 were replaced by the New Zealand Maori - and Australia A who participated in 2007 and 2008 have withdrawn from the competition.

Like the Pacific Rugby Cup, the IRB Pacific Nations Cup is a key component of the IRB’s £48m million Strategic Investment initiative and is designed to provide the Pacific Island Nations and Japan with regular high level competition.

The tournament structure for the 2011 IRB Pacific Nations Cup has been condensed with the three rounds being played over two weeks with the opening match, Japan v Samoa, being played in Tokyo on 2 July and the remainder of the Tournament being played in Fiji between 2 and 13 July 2011.  The entire Tournament will be played within the IRB's Southern Hemisphere Window enabling Unions to secure the services of their overseas-based players in preparation for RWC 2011.

2006 Champions: Junior All Blacks
2007 Champions: Junior All Blacks
2008 Champions: New Zealand Maori
2009 Champions: Junior All Blacks
2010 Champions: Samoa

2 teams from Fiji are sitting pretty heading into the final round of the PRC, aiming at them is the best of the Pacific itching for a finals berth.

The tightly contested PRC matches will be played in Sigatoka, on Fiji’s beautiful Coral Coast. The forecast is for mild overcast weather and 3 crunch games are locked in for an entertaining day.

The Fiji Barbarians & the Fiji Warriors are close, but not quite guaranteed a run in the final yet. Today we caught up with the Warriors at their Captains Run and spirits are very high, they have sprung some changes for the last round and look motivated for victory.

Watch a Warriors interview below:

The matches are:

Tautahi Gold vs Upolu Samoa at 11am

Fiji Barbarians vs Savai'i Samoa at 2pm

Fiji Warriors vs Tau'uta Reds at 5pm

In these games some interesting and challenging encounters emerge, some for the good and some for records they will not want to have.

If Upolu come second tomorrow in their match, they will be the first ever team in the PRC to go winless. In their way to avoid this record is the grunty Tautahi Gold team, the desired win will not be easy, but nor will sleeping after 5 games to zip on the score-sheet. Upolu to date has strung one good half together, tomorrow is their last shot to end the PRC with a smile.

If the Fiji teams win, they are both in the final, if this happens it too will be a first. Never before have 2 teams from one nation made the finalists in the PRC.

This site will bring you live scores, match reports and stunning images of all the action- stay tuned.
