Peter Horne Appointed IRB Oceania Region High Performance Manager

The International Rugby Board has announced the appointment of Peter Horne as High Performance Manager for Oceania.

Horne joins the IRB from Guinness Premiership club Saracens, where he was General Manager, and is no stranger to the Game in Oceania having previously performed the role of High Performance Manager with the Samoa Rugby Union, managing the implementation of the IRB-funded High Performance Units for the Union.

“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Peter as IRB Oceania Region High Performance Manager. He brings with him a wealth of experience of working with High Performance Olympic and Rugby athletes at the highest level and has an in-depth understanding of the Game in the Pacific Islands,” said IRB Head of Development and Performance Mark Egan.

“The position is a very important one in terms of providing ongoing support to the respective Pacific Island Union High Performance programmes. Through the creation of the £48 million Strategic Investment Programme, the IRB has invested heavily in High Performance structures, facilities and tournaments across Fiji, Tonga and Samoa and this investment was reflected in the performances at Rugby World Cup 2007.”

“Peter’s role will involve working closely with the Unions on the delivery of the IRB funded programmes which are a crucial element of their preparations for Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand."

“Excellent progress has been made since the launch of the Strategic Investment Programme in August 2005, but the momentum needs to keep going and the investment in High Performance knowledge and expertise means that the IRB can provide the best possible support to the Unions in the Region,” added Egan.

Horne said: “I am delighted to be taking up what is an exciting opportunity with the IRB to work with Unions in a region that I have great passion for. There is tremendous potential in the Pacific Island Unions and I am looking forward to building Rugby in the region and assisting in further improving the performances of the Islands' teams in 2011.”
