Rugby is becoming more popular in Vanuatu following the successful staging of the 2017 Pacific Mini Games and Vanuatu Rugby Union are working to meet the increased interest and rise in participation levels.

Over the past week regional trainers from Oceania Rugby spent time in Port Vila running Match Official, Coaching and Get Into Rugby courses to assist Vanuatu Rugby Union with the increased participation levels in Rugby in Vanuatu.

John Miller Kalo, Vanuatu Rugby Union President said, “We the board of Vanuatu have come to realise over this week that Oceania Rugby regional trainers have been coming to deliver courses time and time again however the follow through and progression here in Vanuatu has stalled. We have made the commitment this week as the Board to ensuring the progression of Match Officials, Coaches and the Get Into Rugby Programme to allow the best future for rugby in Vanuatu.”

The new Coaches went through the ‘what’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ to coach through the coaching process, principles of play, functional roles and key factors. Coaches also had the opportunity to start the process to be accredited as level 2 coaches in the near future they will be assessed through game practicals and analysis.

The Get Into Rugby training consisted of both practical and theory based session covering the 8 modules of GIR. This includes practical coaching sessions, reporting of program updates and rugby ready.

The attendees at the Match Official courses conducted practical Level 1 MO Course and a further 4 went through Part 1 of MO Level 2 course.

Regional Training Manager Talemo Waqa said, “It was really exciting to see the range of new Match Officials who attended the trainings this week. We identified four people to advance through to start the MO Level 2 course and between Oceania Rugby and Vanuatu Rugby Union we will continue to work with them to complete the ongoing practical components of this course to obtain the higher accreditation”.

With 13 new accredited Match Officials, 15 new accredited Coaches and 15 people having undertaken Get into Rugby coach training it is of the hope of Vanuatu Rugby Union will accredited more coaches in Vanuatu for the betterment of player welfare.
