Tonga v Solomon Islands at the Van2017 Pacific Mini Games

Tonga have joined regional friends, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Samoa to qualify through to the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Franscico

Defeating the Solomon Islands to take Bronze in the Rugby Sevens event at the Van2017 Pacific Mini Game on the weekend was enough to secure the final qualification position for the region.

Both teams knew the value of this match - not only was there a Games medal at stake but the qualification position was also up for grabs. Tonga took the match with a 24-19 score line but it was a hard fought win.

Solomon Islands had control in the first half of the game but Tonga fought back with both determination and a great deal of support from a very vocal Tongan contingent in the crowd.

In other results, New Caledonia secured a 17-12 win to secure 5th place, while the hosts Vanuatu finished a creditable 7th defeating Niue, an improved performance from the 11th place ranking in the recent Oceania Rugby Sevens Championships.
