The Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions (FORU) today announced four (4) Member Unions will participate in the 2011 Oceania Cup to be held in Port Moresby, from the 29thNovember to the 3rd of December 2011.  Defending Champions Papua New Guinea will host the national teams of Niue, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

Held biennially, the Oceania Cup is FORU’s showpiece rugby event for its Development and Targeted Unions, and provides a pathway for these Unions to experience the rigours of International rugby competition.  2009 Champions, Papua New Guinea, went onto play Samoa in the Oceania Rugby World Cup qualifying event, which saw Samoa qualify for RWC 2011.

Oceania Cup Host Union President, Richard Sapias, is very excited that International rugby will again be staged in Papua New Guinea.

“The PNGRFU are very proud and excited that the people of Papua New Guinea will again witness International rugby in Port Moresby.  This is a momentous occasion for Papua New Guinea, which has a strong rugby following, and the PNGRFU look forward to hosting our regional Island cousins, and a successful Oceania Cup.”

Oceania Cup Tournament Director, Michael Groom, says the Oceania Cup provides an important pathway into International competition for the Participating Unions.  “The Oceania Cup provides an ideal opportunity for the Participating Unions to expose their players to international competition, and to gauge their progress against their fellow Development and Targeted Unions.”
