Australia produced the first upset of the day by beating Wellington champions Fiji to reach their first Cup semi final for two years. Michael O'Connor's young side played a superb match of physical intensity and looked after the ball well to restrict Fijian possession and take their chances. Bernard Foley's two tries in the first half set them well on their way and with Kimami Situati and skipper Pat McCutcheon put in star performances as they stretched out to a fine 26-5 win.
New Zealand won through to the Cup semis with a tight 12-5 victory against reigning World Series champions South Africa.
Kenya sent their 1,500 travelling fans into raptures by pulling level with England on the final hooter and then scoring first in sudden-death extra time to win through.
Samoa then produced a superb display against Wales, Alafoti Fa'osiliva inspiring them to come from behind and win through in the lower half of the draw.
Fiji, South Africa, England and Wales will contest the Plate competition.
Bowl and Shield
France, Chile, Argentina and USA have all scored opening victories to make it through to the Bowl semis - Japan, Canada, Scotland and Guyana drop to the Shield.
IRB Sevens World Series: How it works
So far this season New Zealand and Fiji have been the two teams to beat. The kiwis won the first two tournaments of the World Series in Dubai and George before Christmas to open up a lead and then in Wellington last weekend Fiji hit back to take their first title of the season and close the gap on the men in black at the top of the table.
There are eight tournaments in the IRB Sevens World Series. Three have been played in Dubai, South Africa and New Zealand and this is the fourth. After this the teams will go to Adelaide and Hong Kong in March and London and Edinburgh in May.
Depending on how well they do, teams take a certain number of World Series points from each event, and those points have been increased this season as follows:
| Trophy | Success rate | Series points | |
| Cup | Winner (1) Runner Up (1) Semi Final (2) Quarter Final (4) | 24 points 20 points 16 points | |
| Plate | Winner (1) Runner Up (1) Semi Final (2) | 12 points 8 points 6 points | |
| Bowl | Winner (1) | 4 points | |
| Shield | Winner | 0 points |
