Fiji announce their squad for the ANZ Pacific Nations Cup.
The brains trust of Fiji Rugby has named their wider squad to compete in the upcoming rugby fest in Fiji. Casting your eyes over the list you see a star-studded line up from around the globe, as well as some home-grown talent from the Pacific Rugby Cup.
In a christmas type atmosphere these Island men all race home from international contracts around the world, Viti(Fiji) is home, a place they adore and a place where they see family, eat their loved food and hug their family. It all happens in the international test window and they are here to make a real impact in the ANZ Pacific Nations Cup & make their families and country proud.
Head coach Illy Tabua is drawing on the core of his team that achieved so much in the 07 RWC in France. Graham Dewes created history with the winning try in France to get Fiji into the quarter-finals, alongside him were Akapusi Qera & Seru Rabeni, the last 2 boys have been causing havoc in the European club scene. All of these guys are in the squad and have grown so much as players in the two years since then. Adding even more spice to the team are French Top 14 scoring machine Napolioni Nalaga, Stormers wingers Sireli Naqelevuki and Ulster speedster Timoci Nagusa.
All of a sudden this team has class written all over it, question marks will always come on a Fiji team in the tight area. Line-outs don’t seem to be an issue with aerial exponents like Ifereimi Rawaqa there to swoop and pluck the ball for Fiji.
In the real grunt department the Pacific Rugby Cup men from Fiji have shown a lot of steel this season, it is an area the High performance Unit has been working on a lot & it has paid off. This squad have had their mark set high by the PRC men, they will be looking to make this same steel defence roll out on the international test matches. A heap of this responsibility will be on the mammoth shoulders of Kele Leawere, he is a beast, he goes forward and his ability will dictate if Fiji can get on the front foot or not.
Interesting points on this squad are that of the 55-member squad, 21 are survivors from the Fiji side that reached the 2007 World Cup quarter-final in France. Fiji rugby's bad boy Rupeni Caucau has been named, he last represented the Flying Fijians in June 2006. Since then he has been hit by injuries, suspensions and dropped by French club Agen but later picked up again."He (Caucau) has shown his interest to play again and we're giving him a chance to show himself," national coaching director Ilivasi Tabua said.
Players will undergo a fitness test this morning with national team trainer Nacanieli Cawanibuka.
